My research focuses on discovering the developmental genetic programs that give rise to the unique features of arachnids. Using gene silencing approaches in daddy longlegs and comparative gene expression in groups like sea spiders, mites, ticks, and camel spiders, I’ve been able to work out key players in the patterning of the jointed leg. I also have a broad interest in genomics, particularly developing resources for understudied groups like vinegaroons and palpigrades.

What made you choose this program at UW–Madison?

I chose this graduate program after taking my advisor’s Invertebrate Biology and Evolution course as an undergrad. I fell in love with the crazy body plans of invertebrate taxa, and wanted to understand the nature of their often alien traits.
